Julep Christmas Hello Kitty

Hi guys, Rathy and I are taking over Julep’s instagram account!

This look features Hello Kitty in various Christmas outfits! I wanted to paint Christmas themed nail art without it being too generic like Christmas trees, or snowflakes, etc. In general, I like to add a little something special and put an extra spin on holiday themed nails. They are quite fun for me. Of course, I do enjoy the simple looks as well, but I find painting small details rather therapeutic. Honestly I struggle a bit with taping as I get impatient waiting for my layers to dry. ;)

That said, yes, this is entirely hand painted! I’ve had several people at work asking me if these were stickers, but nope. I painted every stroke, that’s why the lines are so imperfect. @_@ I do think it’s a huge improvement already from last year, but there’s always more room for growth!

On my ring finger, I’m using Julep January. This is one of my all time favorite reds. It’s a lovely true red, and the formula is excellent. I would have to say this is a must have for any nail polish addict’s collection. It is beautiful on its own and super easy to work with in nail art as well. Often times I struggle with polishes getting to thick or clumpy as I’m layering them, but Julep January is just magic. *_* I use it in so many looks.

Julep Holiday Tartan Tutorial

Julep Takeover! Daisy and I have been given a great opportunity to take over their Instagram account. We’ll be posting photos throughout the day on their IG account which will also coincide with some of the posts here on the blog.

First up is a lovely holiday tartan design that I created on my nails. For this look we used all Julep nail polishes which will be listed as we go along. Continue to find out how to recreate this on your own!

Let’s start off with a base coat of red. I’m using Julep Myriam which is a nice bright red creme polish. The formula is magical. It’s super easy to paint with, and only takes a couple of coats. Make sure to paint a top coat after this to prevent polish pick up.

Next, apply Nail Vinyls Straights like so, placing three of them vertically against the nail leaving a gap in between.

Pick a polish that’s just a shade darker than your red, or use something like Julep Nic which is a deep crimson, but in one coat goes on sheer enough. Don’t forget to top coat this layer once you’re done.

Now that you’ve got all your vertical stripes. Go ahead and place three straight nail vinyls going horizontally. Julep Nic was quite nice because the spot where the lines crossed became darker. This will help you in the next step.

Using a black polish like Julep Jet and a small paintbrush, fill in the square areas where the lines cross. We want to intensify the illusion of the tartan plaid design.

With a fine liner brush dipped in a gold polish, carefully add the gold thread accents to the design. I’m using Julep Zelda here to add a pink champagne metallic which keeps it neutral to the red.

And there you have it. A pattern packed with layers and texture, but simple enough to recreate. Happy Holidays!!
