Julep Holiday Tartan Tutorial

Julep Takeover! Daisy and I have been given a great opportunity to take over their Instagram account. We’ll be posting photos throughout the day on their IG account which will also coincide with some of the posts here on the blog.

First up is a lovely holiday tartan design that I created on my nails. For this look we used all Julep nail polishes which will be listed as we go along. Continue to find out how to recreate this on your own!

Let’s start off with a base coat of red. I’m using Julep Myriam which is a nice bright red creme polish. The formula is magical. It’s super easy to paint with, and only takes a couple of coats. Make sure to paint a top coat after this to prevent polish pick up.

Next, apply Nail Vinyls Straights like so, placing three of them vertically against the nail leaving a gap in between.

Pick a polish that’s just a shade darker than your red, or use something like Julep Nic which is a deep crimson, but in one coat goes on sheer enough. Don’t forget to top coat this layer once you’re done.

Now that you’ve got all your vertical stripes. Go ahead and place three straight nail vinyls going horizontally. Julep Nic was quite nice because the spot where the lines crossed became darker. This will help you in the next step.

Using a black polish like Julep Jet and a small paintbrush, fill in the square areas where the lines cross. We want to intensify the illusion of the tartan plaid design.

With a fine liner brush dipped in a gold polish, carefully add the gold thread accents to the design. I’m using Julep Zelda here to add a pink champagne metallic which keeps it neutral to the red.

And there you have it. A pattern packed with layers and texture, but simple enough to recreate. Happy Holidays!!

Techy Grids and Gold Tips

As Daisy mentioned, Allison of Born Pretty sent us some items to review. This time around, I’ll be showing off a stamped look using their stamping tool and one of the plates that they carry. Just a note though, this is actually my first time attempting to stamp on my nails so I had a few hit and misses as I was learning how to use the tool. The idea is simple, it just takes a bit of practice to use.

The 2 piece Practical Nail Stamper and Scraper is item #15851, and the Nail Stamp Template I used is QA97 which is item #15613. More information available on their product pages. You can’t go wrong with the prices either because each of these are definitely affordable. But if you like a sweeter deal, you can get 10% off using our coupon code DGG10 at Born Pretty Store.

So there’s several designs on the plate. I attempted to try the cherries, but either the polish consistency wasn’t right or my technique just wasn’t working. I couldn’t get the cherries design onto my stamper. I then decided to move to the other grid-like design with a gold polish that I know works well. I managed to not have too many mess ups, but it takes a few tries. Overall the product does what it’s supposed to and I like having fun design options without freehanding everything.

Game Of Thrones: House Targaryen

I am finally close to finishing the 2nd book (Clash of Kings) in the Song of Ice and Fire series. I’ve heard rumors that George RR Martin’s next book will be a prequel to the series, and that the prequel will be telling the story of when the Targaryens were still in power. Anyone want to confirm if these are true? Anyhow, I will continue chugging through the series in the meantime.

I thought it’d be a fun challenge to paint my nails each major House. Here I’m starting with House Targaryen, blood of the dragons. :-)
